Based on information received via chat, Berkat Ambon volunteers visited Ericka Tomasoa (23), who, according to a doctor’s diagnosis, is suffering from anemia, an autoimmune condition, and a lump in her gallbladder, which has caused her abdomen to become swollen. Currently, Ericka is in the hospital alone. According to her and the nurses, no family members have come to visit her during her stay. Her daily needs in the hospital are being helped, as much as possible, by the family of another patient sharing her room. Her condition is very concerning.

Previously, it was reported that she would undergo a procedure to remove fluid from her abdomen. However, after Berkat Ambon volunteers communicated with Ericka, she shared that the procedure has been postponed due to lack of funds. Additional treatments and medications are needed, some of which are not covered by BPJS (national health insurance).

We truly hope that Ericka can soon receive the medical care needed to ease her suffering. The swelling in her abdomen is causing shortness of breath, and her skin has become very dry and uncomfortable. Prayers and donations from all of us are greatly needed for Ericka. Anyone who feels moved to share kindness and help her can contact Berkat Ambon via Messenger.

Update 4/13/26: Earlier today, volunteers brought pillowcases, essential supplies, and donations for Ericka. They also met with the doctor to understand the next steps in her treatment. According to the doctor, Ericka (Ika) will need surgery. However, because her platelet count is very low, it must first be increased. She urgently needs 4 units of type O blood. The doctor also explained that a family member must be present to take responsibility for the medical procedures that will be carried out. Berkat Ambon volunteers have located Ika’s parents and met her father, who works daily as a parking attendant. He has agreed to come to the hospital this afternoon to meet with the medical team and discuss Ika’s treatment plan moving forward. The volunteers have also spoken with the medical staff to assist Ika with any medications that need to be purchased and are not covered by BPJS. We continue to pray that everything will go smoothly and that Ika will receive the care she urgently needs. Anyone who feels moved to help can contact Berkat Ambon via Messenger.

Update 4/17/26:

Berkat Ambon volunteers visited Ericka (Ika) again. Thank God, her skin condition has improved after being treated with olive oil, although no family members have come to visit her yet. Earlier, we met again with Ika’s father and encouraged him to go to the hospital to obtain a referral letter for blood collection from PMI (Indonesian Red Cross). According to the medical team, Ika’s platelet count must be increased. One unit of platelets requires 4 units of blood, and each unit of blood costs around IDR 490,000.

Ika also shared that the money given to her for food was lost during the night. We encouraged her that the Lord Jesus is able to provide for all her needs, and that she should continue to stay close to Him and focus on His will. Because her abdomen is swollen, her current clothes no longer fit. She is in need of loose shirts or tops to change into. Since no family has come to visit, the nurses have been helping bathe her and wash her belongings. May the Lord Jesus bless the nurses who continue to care for Ika. Anyone who feels moved to share kindness and help Ika can contact Berkat Ambon via Messenger.

Update 4/24/26:

Today, volunteers together with four donors were ready to donate blood for Ericka. However, because platelet blood bags are not yet available, the donation has been postponed until further notice from PMI to Berkat Ambon.

Thank you to all the kind-hearted people who are willing to help Ika. Berkat Ambon also brought her essential needs, including diapers, wet and dry tissues, and food. May the Lord Jesus bless everyone who has donated financially, those willing to donate blood, and all who continue to pray for Ericka. Special thanks as well to the nurses in the ward who are caring for her with love and compassion.

A Prayer for Hope: Lord, I maintain my hope in You and I hold onto the assurance that You are my Rock and my Refuge who bends His ear when the afflicted call out Your Name. As David prayed in Psalm 18:1: “I love you, Lord, my strength. The Lord is my rock, my fortress, and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.”
